Acerca de nuestra casa

Casa Borboleta consists of two detached houses, both of which we have restored from a derilect olive farm, to provide modern but traditional accommodation. The house is our home for much of the year and the Barn - separated from the house by a large courtyard - is totally self contained for our visitors use. We are situated in a lovely rural area of Central Portugal, on the edge of a small village, in a very private setting - not overlooked and with beautiful views - surrounded by fields and forest. This is the perfect spot to completely get away from it all and relax in the quiet and tranquillity of our lush, green country hideaway.

Access to Casa Borboleta is though the village of Chas Grandes, onto a quiet lane and through a private gateway to your own car parking area.

We are pleased to offer panoramic views, a fabulous private pool with sun loungers and parasols, plus a shady covered area by the pool for respite from the hot sun. At the front of the Barn there is a secluded patio area with coffee table, parasol and seating for four. There is a built in barbeque in the courtyard with table and chairs to seat six for outdoor dining, with a super patio heater for any cool evenings. The Barn is surrounded by gardens and open land with numerous olive trees and also citrus and fruit trees, fruit bushes and vines. In the large courtyard you will also find a snooker/table tennis table and a dart board.

The Barn has a wonderful open plan, sociable living space which encompasses the kitchen, dining area and living room. There is comfortable lounge seating plus a dining table and chairs to seat four. A traditional wood burner is situated in the lounge area and integrated convector heating is available for the winter months. We have excellent Satellite TV with all English channels and radio stations, plus unlimited Wi-Fi. DVDs and CDs, games and books are available for our guests to enjoy.

The handmade bespoke kitchen has marble worktops and is well fitted throughout with an electric oven and ceramic hob, fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster, coffee machine and juicer.

Downstairs has a traditional tiled floor and features wooden beamed ceilings, the bedrooms have lovely wooden flooring.

There is one double bedroom and one twin bedroom, both fitted with locally crafted built in wardrobes and matching additional furniture. Each bedroom has a fan for the warmer months and convector heater for the chillier times of year. The bathroom is modern with bath and shower over and has a heated towel rail.

The Barn was renovated in 2015 and all furniture, fittings, appliances etc were installed new. All windows and doors are double glazed.

The front door opens onto the private patio which leads down past the colourful garden to the beautiful 10 m x 5 m saline treated pool and secluded large sunbathing area. The back door opens onto the large courtyard, which separates the Barn from the house and is home to our extremely productive lemon tree! This area also gives access to the utility room which holds a fridge/freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board.

Guests are free to wander on our land which extends to just under an acre and has a variety of trees - including many olive trees - which still remain here, surviving from the original farm.

Más sobre nosotros

  1. We are Nigel and Marian, a retired couple in our early sixties and from the UK. We bought Casa Borboleta in 2009 and spent several years renovating the house and using it as a holiday home. Since our retirement we have enjoyed a lot of time here in Central Portugal but have also tried to get out and about to explore different parts of this beautiful country and to see other places in Europe.

In 2015 we renovated the Barn adjacent to our house, to provide lovely guest accommodation for our family and friends. They have enjoyed staying there so much that we have now decided to share it with others and the home exchange scheme seems the ideal way to do that. Obviously this will also to enable us to experience living for short periods in other areas, which we are very excited about.

We have a beautiful white Portuguese Water dog who would like to accompany us on our travels some of the time! She is hypoallergenic, does not moult and is very well trained but if you do not accept dogs she is very happy to stay in the local doggy hotel.

Having quite a large family in the UK we return regularly - we have retained a property there in the North West of England. This means that we can be flexible on exchange arrangements and dates, leaving you to decide if you would like us to be here during your stay or if you prefer to have tha place to yourselves - either is fine by us.

Please do contact us if you have any queries.

This peaceful area of Portugal is delightful, not yet part of the mass tourist scene the roads are very quiet and pass through beautiful scenery - giving easy access by car to many places of interest. We are situated just 15 minutes drive from the pretty country market town of Arganil, which has a good selection of shops - including two large supermarkets - banks, hospital, pharmacies and a weekly traditional market. There are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants, many of which are accessed through the pedestrian only part of the town and an attractive square, which has water fountains and stages traditional entertainment many evenings over the summer.

It is 40 minutes to the picturesque old University City of Coimbra, an hour from the coast, an hour and three quarters from Porto, Lisbon can be reached in a two hour drive. Train services in the area are also excellent, with the Alfa Pendular service out of Coimbra taking just one and a half hours to reach Lisbon. The best preserved and largest Roman ruins in Portugal are to be found at Conimbriga, which is 33 miles away and Fatima, famous as a holy pilgrimage destination, is an hour and half away. Obidos, a two hour drive, is also worthy of a visit - the town remains a well preserved example of medieval architecture. We have included some photos of places we have enjoyed that you may also like to visit. Please note that due to the rural nature of this area a car is essential.

There is something for everyone in Central Portugal; culture and history in the cities, nature in the countryside and of course the beautiful beaches along the atlantic coast, with traditional resorts such as Figueira da Foz being a one hour drive away. There are also golf courses within easy reach - the nearest being two nine hole courses each a 40 minutes drive and the superb 27 hole Montebelo course at Viseu, just under an hour away. Horseriding is available in nearby Gois and river fishing can be accessed at several local nearby spots .

River beaches also abound locally and hillside wooded walks/cycles are right on the doorstep. There are many Schist Villages in this part of Portugal, the nearest being Aigra Nova - which is also the start for good, clearly marked circular mountain hikes in the surrounding hills. The stunning scenery of the Serra D'Estrela mountains is a lovely drive of just over an hour, offering breathtaking views from the highest point in Portugal - it is a popular ski area in the winter.

Alternatively just explore the area and enjoy meeting many friendly people in the numerous picturesque nearby towns and villages. Also of course, sample Portuguese cuisine and try the huge selection of local wines and ports - all at extremely reasonable prices.
