Acerca de nuestra casa

This beautiful house was designed for us by our eldest son soon after he qualified as architect, and built with dedication using local materials and artisans. We were involved in the entire building process from the beginning and could celebrate its completion in April 2013. The garden has also grown now, and the addition of a swimming pool end of last year, means we now have a dream house on the beach which comfortably accommodates 6 adults, a baby and another child.

Bureau M & DB won first prize 'Gold', in the category 'Newcomer' Fritz Höger Architectural awards 2014, for the design.

It is a wonderful space full of light and air. You can experience a truly tropical beach stay with the added comfort of western mod cons. The bedrooms have air-conditioning and two of the en-suite bathrooms have hot/cold water. The open-air bathroom only has cold water.

We have a cosy sitting and dining area inside, and sunbeds, a BBQ and terraces for outdoor dining too.
There's cable TV and wi-fi.

Más sobre nosotros

  1. We are a Dutch (David)/Sri Lankan (Nirmala) couple, and semi-retired professionals. We both love to travel, and we are avid readers. David's greatest interests are military history and music, and I love art.

This is a second home in Sri Lanka, so we don't always live here. We also rent it out when we are not using it ourselves. We are new to home swapping but it is a very appealing idea, so we would really like to try it out.

Our home is very well looked after, casual and comfortable, with books, board games and dvd's for those days we prefer to spend lounging around the house. We love to collect art and do have a few pieces on the walls, but we've kept it to a minimum for the uncluttered look that this house deserves.

We have a staff of four, a cook, gardener, night security and cook who are dedicated to spoiling our guests! We are giving a little back to the community in which we find ourselves by providing employment to these four lovely people.

Our home has direct access to a very quiet, sandy beach - just out the gate from our beach front garden! There are no private beaches in Sri Lanka, so this is about as private as it gets with neither cafés, shops nor vendors. Just a few tourists from neighbouring properties and the occasional locals out for a stroll or a dip (during the season) will be the only people you will see on the beach.

The closest town, Ambalangoda, is just 5 minutes by tuk-tuk. Ambalangoda is the home of mask making and also well known for it's numerous antique shops where you can spend a good number of hours looking for bargains. This busy town has a fisheries harbour, numerous shops and 3 smallish supermarkets.

Hikkaduwa which is just 15 minutes by road, has an abundance of cafés, bars and restaurants. This is also the place for water sports. For water-skiing you can go to Bentota, about 40 minutes north on the Galle Road.

Other places to visit are of course the Dutch Fort in Galle, a cinnamon plantation, a tea plantation, a wonderful specimen of a rain forest in Kanneliya, moonstone mines, and in season, whale watching from Mirissa.

You will be spoilt for choice if your interest is in Buddhist temples! You can even visit one that occupies its own island on a lake when you take a river boat cruise.
