Acerca de nuestra casa

We acquired our plot of land in 2003 and spent the next 18 months building, and moved into our (not quite finished) home in 2005. Having worked on the house and garden since then, we now feel it is more than ready to exchange. Though it is a new house with all the insulation, light and other consequent convenient advantages, it has, we feel the comfort, appeal and character born out of being individually designed.
The house is on three floors: the well-equiped kitchen, conservatory and dining area is spacious and yet intimate and many a late summer has been spent staring at the last rays of sunlight disappearing, as we have our meal. The rest of the ground floor is taken up with a bedroom, bathroom and TV room. The design of the master bedroom (on the second floor)was influenced by visits to US homes, sporting en-suite shower room, King bed, balcony and walk-in wardrobes. Also on this floor is a study and our main sitting room, allowing us to take advantage of the glorious views across mid Devon. The top floor tends to be designated for guests with bedroom and bathroom plus another large bedroom/table tennis/ music room.
There is a sheltered courtyard immediately outside the conservatory, leading on to a very large garden - vegetable plot, lawn, herbatious beds, ponds, fruit trees and chickens (you can get lost at the bottom of the garden if you wish...)
The chickens are very chatty and give us delicious eggs, but can be boarded out, if necessary!

Más sobre nosotros

  1. We are Liam and Elaine - we have two grown children and two grandchildren, all living in Devon. Recently retired, we were both in education: Elaine the Deputy Head Teacher of a school in Exeter and Liam a Lecturer in Mathematics at Exeter College. We are keen sports people: we both play tennis, Elaine swims and Liam runs and plays badminton. We love cooking, often making extensive use of the vegetable garden and when we can, we enjoy times away, whether it is abroad (Turkey, New York and Prague are the highlights this year) or locally - frequently booking ourselves into favourite hotels in Cornwall and taking advantage of one of our other pleasures, hiking. We also sing with a Choral Society, love reading, cinema and theatre.
We are experienced home exchangers: North America on five occasions and also within Europe. Having established strong friendships in San Francisco, meeting up with them in England and in Italy, we now find ourselves in a position to exchange and wish to return to the city of our very first adventure.

Our home is situated in a small mid-Devon village, Down St Mary, with lovely walks across fields, woods and streams on the doorstep. We think we have the best of all worlds living here: peace and quiet, with just birdsong for company and yet just five minutes drive from a small food shop, ten minutes to the nearest small town (Crediton) and thirty minutes to Exeter, the principal city of the South West. There are local train/bus services, within walking distance, travelling South to Exeter, or North to the market town of Barnstaple. Historic Exeter has a beautiful cathedral and the free guided tours will show visitors its Roman walls and Medieval streets and buildings; shop-aholics will not find Exeter disappointing. Crediton, the nearest town, has supermarkets and individual shops such as a delicatessen, a good butcher, a bakery, a book store, excellent coffee shops, farm shops as well as a sports centre/swimming pool.
Dartmoor, Exmoor and the Devon and Cornish coasts are all comfortably accessible, both for hiking and beaching (we were basking on deserted beaches and swimming in October this year)
Jane Austin's city of Bath is two hours by car and London takes two and half hours by train. Exeter Airport is small and friendly and convenient, making main land Europe a short flight away (or a sea crossing from nearby Plymouth)
