Acerca de nuestra casa

We live in the countryside, but only a few minutes walk from a small village, Harbertonford,( via a medieval 'Green Lane') where there is a very good shop & post office. The barn was once a cider press, then part of a dairy farm. A few years ago, part of the farm was sold and converted into a small complex of rennovated barns. So our barn is both ancient and modern, Grade 2 listed, by English Heritage, but all the services and fittings are brand new. We have a courtyard which gets the sun all day, and a personal garage plus private parking for residents. We are on a bus route to Totnes, Exeter, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Plymouth, and the London to Penzance express train service stops at Totnes (2hrs.30 mins from London). We can walk, safely, through country lanes and water meadows, following the river, to country pubs and Sharpham Vineyard. Our house is flooded with light (important to us)and has all modern equipment, including wifi, satellite tv, underfloor heating and is furnished eclectically with some pieces from South Africa (where we lived for 8 years) returning to the UK recently. There are three bedrooms, one of which we keep as a study. The main bedroom has an en-suite with shower & there is a family bathroom too. The third bedroom has an 'arrow slit' window and the windows at ground floor replace the shutes through which apples were loaded onto the presses. We can watch the cows and sheep being worked by our farmer, John, through our front doors, and watch the trees and clouds through the sitting room roof windows. We love it.

Más sobre nosotros

  1. We have been married 46 years, and have two grown-up and independent children. We are both more or less retired! Gaye was an Educational Advisor for 20+ years for children with Autism, mainly advising parents and professionals how to 'be' with these children. Garth worked in UK universities as an economist, and latterly took Visiting Professorial posts in Southern Africa ( hence the 'more or less' comment on retirement), and ran his own Research company. We lived in South Africa, following retirement, for 8 years. We enjoy walking, TV, music, cinema, theatre and reading. We were both 'sporty'. and sustain a keen interest in many sports. We have exchanged homes before, in the 1980s, when our children were young; and we now want to start exchanging again. We know the USA from previous exchanges to Californa and Oregon.

Barrio/zona

Rural, some 800 metres off the road from Totnes to Kingsbridges, in the 'South Hams', possibly the most expensive rural area to live in the UK. We can walk down the Green Lane to our small village, which has a pub, post office with shop, garage and a river which eventually flows into the river Dart. Totnes is very well-known for its 'eco' practices- it has its own currency, more vegans per head of population than any other demography in the UK,and has a thriving arts scene (Dartington Hall is on the door step). Dartmouth, at the head of the Dart, with its famous Royal Naval College ( Princes Philip and Charles are former students) is 20 mins away by bus or car. Salcombe, with its estuary-side pubs , shops, and stunning beaches, is 30 mins away, and Plymouth and Exeter, 40 mins away by bus or car.The area has some steep valleys, so cycling is a necessary challenge!
