Acerca de nuestra casa

Our cottage, the Old Mill is a renovated linen mill built in 1676. Situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty two miles from Hay on Wye - the famous "town of books" it is ideal for book loving, outdoors people. It is a haven from the busy world, lost down a quiet lane. The cottage is furnished in a simple style with English, country antiques in keeping with its traditional character. It is equipped for six people. You will find it very comfortable. Its age makes it charming, but not as perfect, of course, as a new house. On the ground floor, there is a living-room with the original, large, stone fireplace and a country kitchen where we eat looking out onto the orchard. We enjoy cooking on the 4-oven Aga range but there is an electric oven and microwave for the less adventurous. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, two with queen size beds and one with two single beds. The bathroom on this floor has a Victorian-style tub and a power shower. There is an acre of garden comprising orchard, hillside and enclosed lawns. We have a car (automatic,) available for use.

Más sobre nosotros

  1. We are an English couple who live in a farm in Canada as well as in this cottage. I work part-time and my husband is retired. We both grew up not far from Hay-on-Wye which we enjoy for its combination of civilised pursuits (it has one of the biggest literary festivals in the world in June... as well as life drawing every Monday and concerts in nearby churches) and the hiking. We like to travel and usually rent a home or apartment or stay in a B&B because of the extra reward that that brings to the experience of travelling. We have particularly enjoyed India, Argentina, Guatemala, Mexico and Vietnam, as well as France, Italy and Ireland. We are used to, and happy to have, people staying in our cottage which I also rent out. We look forward to an adventure.

The cottage is peacefully situated next to a stream, at the end of a lane, in a secluded valley with three other stone cottages as neighbours. Our address is Hay on Wye, Hereford, England, but we are on the Welsh side of the border. Just inside the national park, we have wonderful walks right from our garden out into the fields, woods and surrounding hills of the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains. In the UK an extensive system of public rights of way means that you have the unique opportunity to walk through the landscape all over the countryside. Immediately around the cottage it is very pretty and sheltered; up on the hills it is wilder and more dramatic. The sound of rushing streams and waterfalls is never far away. Just two miles from the Old Mill is Hay on Wye, an attractive and ancient market town of mediaeval and Georgian houses (market is every Thursday). It is a lot of fun to explore its 30 book shops, many art and craft galleries, antique stores, pubs and restaurants. Within 15 minutes drive are the picturesque Wye Valley and the wildly beautiful Gospel Pass and Llanthony Priory. Within an hour's drive is Tintern Abbey, many many castles, the cathedral city of Hereford and the fascinating Big Pit mining museum... just to mention a few choices. It is possible to take advantage of hiking, canoeing, cycling, canal boat tours, horse back riding, golfing. You could make a day out to beautiful towns and cities like Bath, Oxford, Cardiff, Ludlow and the Cotswolds.
